Top 4 Tips for Design Engineers when preparing their CV

As Design Engineers ourselves, and a business that has been recruiting Design Engineers for the best part of 3 decades, we’ve seen and read a fair few CVs in our time.

So, we thought we’d share our top 4 tips on how to help put your CV on top of the pile.

  1. Highlight your software skills in order of proficiency. Make sure you highlight your strongest skills first.
  2. Follow the 10-year rule for skills. If you haven’t used a skill, software package or piece of equipment in the last decade, don’t put it in your top skills section. Highlight the ones that you’re most efficient with now.
  3. Keep it brief! We know….we know, it can be hard to keep a CV to 2 or 3 pages, especially for Engineers who accumulate vast knowledge and skills throughout their career. But, many recruiters will not read past a 3rd Try putting as much detail as possible in recent positions, and just list the ‘Company Name’, ‘Job Title’ and ‘Years of Employment’ for older positions.
  4. Tailor your ‘Personal Profile’. Recruiters will tell you to tailor your CV to each application. This can be time consuming, and difficult. The best place to tailor your CV to a specific job is in the personal profile section. Why?……It’s the easiest to edit, and it’s the very first thing a recruiter will read.
